Vincent Guilbert, 2015, FR, HD, ov, 30'
Vincent Guilbert acquaints us with the grand as well as modest personality of Jean-Louis Costes. Performer and "garage musician", he is better known for his "trash" performances which comprised of howling and gesticulation and for his unclassifiable records; objects of a provocative and often aggressive sincerity which places him above and beyond petty conventions. A portrait filmed in black and white in the intimacy of the performer’s farm house; a chaotic sanctuary in a world itself in disarray.

Ellen Zweig, 2015, US, HD, ov ang st fr, 75'
One of the pioneers of the industrial music scene having (intelligently) traversed the eras, Z’EV’s extensive artistic journey started way back in the USA of the 70’s. Percussionist since childhood, he is committed to staying radical and to keeping off the beaten path; expressing himself through performances, sculptures and sound poetry. With strong imagery drawn from the past and the present and interviews of Z’EV and his collaborators, Ellen Zweig’s documentary sketches the portrait of an artist largely unknown to the general public.
  • 22:00 Concert

Although this totally unclassifiable musician is connected to the industrial music scene Z’EV has become since the 70’s a master percussionist of what he calls "elemental music". In a tribute concert to Jimi Hendrix, he will honour the Nova with a 35 min performance using 40 seconds of an excerpt of the famous Monterray concert where Hendrix burnt and destroyed his guitar. A gesture open to multiple interpretations, (show-off, off limits, nihilism, despair....) which we can take as a turning point of the evolution of performance and music... or a founding gesture for artists like Z’EV.

Bidonville is a music theatre performance from De Kift, the well-known Dutch band with roots in punk and brass bands that it made in collaboration with actor Sanne den Hartogh (NL) and director Erik Whien (NL). A theatrical concert about people on the fringe of the metropolis, the sort of people that we see forever popping up in De Kift’s work. A performance comprised of melancholy, longing and love for the little man. Could you wish for a nicer Christmas present? The band Laibach emerged in the 1980s in Slovenia, then part of communist Yugoslavia which was partly under the influence of the USSR, making Laibach in a sense the first geopolitical rockers in history. Since the early ‘80s, the band creates music with military aesthetics that made the statements of an already deceased punk movement sound like teenage lullabies. In this documentary about their early years, a wealth of images of Slovenian landscapes and cities burdened with heavy industry are interspersed with conversations with Slovenian intellectuals, philosophers, workers, citizens… as well as interviews and public statements by the band members and of course video clips and music by Laibach.

Ruelgo, the only remaining founding member of Le Syndicat still active has collaborated with numerous musicians over the years. The Nova welcomes the duo, Le Syndicat Faction Vivante active since 2014 for a live concert which seems to be every bit noise, instinctive and physically unstoppable. + * Tzii * (DJ set – BE)

Shinya Tsukamoto, 1989, JP, video, ov st fr & ang, 67'
A man wakes up one morning with a bolt poking out of his cheek and transforms into a half-man, half-metal mutant. He meets and gets into a confrontation with another man, made of steel, leading to an unexpected conclusion... Accompanied by the tense industrial music of Shu Ishikawa, sustained by expressionistic cinematography and a sometimes frenzied editing rhythm, Tsukamoto’s film interchanges between nightmare and surrealism. Filmed and edited using "old school" techniques, but possessing the ultra-fast spirit of manga, "Tetsuo" is a powerful and messy precursor to the cyberpunk genre.

The Germans Einstürzende Neubauten (literally translated: "new buildings collapsing inward") came onto the scene during the second wave of the industrial movement. They took a much more literal approach to the notion of "industrial", using electronically-amplified drills, jackhammers, shopping carts and many other objects and tools as instruments. This film by Sogo Ishii follows their tour through Japan at the early and probably most radical stage of their career.

A homoerotic, magical, fantastic and ritual wandering film, "The Angelic Conversation" combines archetypal fairy-tale images with extremely rare industrial shots, all delivered by young men. Derek Jarman invites the new group by ex-Throbbing Gristle member Peter Christopherson for the occasion: COIL, a much more mystical and clearly gay-oriented musical project.

In this Super 8 film converted to 16 mm, form and background are caught in a continuous and vibrant interplay, accentuating the grain of the texture en playing with superposition, transforming every shadow and every ray of light into a tangible object. Until he died of AIDS in 1994, Derek Jarman remained personally and artistically very close to the band Throbbing Gristle, whose members adorned this film with a long soundtrack - improvised as per their usual modus operandi. The combination of sound and image gives this production a strange and magical aura, which we project in Nova in its original format.

MekanOrganik’s concert cancelled, we’re welcoming "Cent ans de solitude", a french solo project, more performing than recording, prefering deepness to the rock n’ roll frenzy. Self presenting as "music artisan", musician Jean-Yves Millet work since a bit less than a hundred years (since the late 80’s actually) on creating sound ambiances full of darkness and melancholy, oniric but percussive. His music, not presented as a long track but as thematic tracks, is a total experience combining syntetic sounds with movies, and, most of all a performative part with "self-percussion and the use amplified moving metal instalation manipulated by the musician. An hypnotic and radical panorama of the post-industrial era. + Dj set Lucius quatre-yeux (FR)

Based on French and Luxembourgian audiovisual archives as well as documents provided by the municipal archives, they recreate step by step the troubling events that affected the region of Marsal in 1968.
