In the mid 70s and 80s, everywhere, technology takes the stage in Black music, opening up new spaces for sound and the imagination. Baltimore is in ruins. Once one of the most important industrial cities, it is now known for its crime and abandoned houses. But there are three things that the inhabitants of Baltimore can not abdicate: music, dancing and great parties. The music and clubbing scene remains stronger than ever, and this film invites us to a party we don’t want to miss.

Pierre Deruisseau,

Go down, Moses, way down in Egyptland,
Tell old Pharaoh,
Let my people go.

(first-ever published Negro spiritual, mid 19th century)

Throughout an entire century, without interruption, innumerable varieties of Moses figures have been extolled for "the Exodus from Egypt". By appropriating the former master’s myths in order to recount ones own history, the theme leads to variations, derivations turn into countless songs. Pharaoh, without fail, leads to bad roles and drownings. It’s time to react.

From the 60s onward, Pharaoh, the man on the throne, finds new followers: Sun Ra, Earth Wind & Fire, Afrika Bambaataa... The return to Egypt is underway. An entire world, one to uncover rather than avoid- music as a mythological counter-attack. The stakes: a change in perspective, an alteration of minds.

They say that history repeats itself,
But history is only his-story.
You haven’t heard my story yet.

(Sun Ra)
