Shalegas, petrol, etc.

The New Eldorado in the quest for energy is called shale gas. In the U.S. is shale gas presented as the American Messiah in lower prices, while the exploitation in Europe is blocked or abandoned due to unreasonably optimistic forecasts, like in Poland for example.
Sometimes mobilizing, often eloquent, the films presented here illustrate the territorial and social consequences which are directly related to the extraction of shale gas.

Josh Fox, 2010, US, video, ov st fr, 107'

Josh Fox narrates his reception of a letter in May, 2008, from a natural gas company offering to lease his family’s land in Milanville, Pennsylvania for $100,000 to drill for gas. Fox then set out to see how communities are being affected in the west where a natural gas drilling boom has been underway for the last decade. He spent time with citizens in their homes and on their land as they relayed their stories of natural gas drilling in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and Texas, among others. He spoke with residents who have experienced a variety of chronic health problems directly traceable to contamination of their air, of their water wells or of surface water.
"Gasland" is also the fulfillment of the director’s dream. On the other side of the Atlantic, the mobilization in the Ardèche in France in 2011 against the giant gas and fracking projects was greatly facilitated by the free and massive distribution of "Gasland"!

Gasland part II shows how the stakes have been raised on all sides in one of the most important environmental issues facing our nation today. The film argues that the gas industry’s portrayal of natural gas as a clean and safe alternative to oil is a myth and that fracked wells inevitably leak over time, contaminating water and air, hurting families, and endangering the earth’s climate with the potent greenhouse gas, methane. In addition the film looks at how the powerful oil and gas industries are in Fox’s words "contaminating our democracy".
_ The screening of the two "Gasland" films will be an opportunity to step aside and to discuss the situation of shale gas in Europe and Belgium in the company of Antoine Simon, a specialist in the matter within the NGO "Friends of the Earth "Europe.

La malédiction du gaz de schiste

Lech Kowalski, 2013, FR-PL, video, vt fr st fr, 84'

One day the people who live in a small village located in far eastern Poland near the Ukrainian border, an ecologically pristine agricultural area called the lungs of Poland discover that Chevron, the world’s fourth largest energy corporation plans to build a shale gas well in their village.
Filmmaker Lech Kowalski was there to film the first ever farmer rebellion against Chevron. But energy companies and the Polish government hope to hit a golden shale gas jackpot and the odds are against the farmers winning. The story about their struggle weaves around their actions and the realities that are taking place far away in Pennsylvania, called the “Saudi Arabia” of shale gas mining. It’s too late to stop the energy companies in Pennsylvania but can the farmers win in Poland? What happens is a surprise, even to the farmers in this small village of fifty families.

Based on the deconstruction of documentary pioneer Robert Flaherty’s films, Lech Kowalski tells with “The End Of The World Begins With A Lie” the history of a lie. It is about the lies that we have been told and are continually being told in order to sell an ideology and material goods that we all want and need.

Aftershocks

The Rough Guide To Democracy

Rakesh Sharma, 2002, IN, video, ov st ang, 68'

Aftershocks is a journey through the labyrinthine universe of Democracy, as it exists in its lowest unit level - the Indian village.
In a world being increasingly shaped by the corporate-nation state and its hydra-heads (WTO/ IMF/World Bank/ADB), the “marginal” citizen is in danger of becoming totally “irrelevant”. His voice has no space in mainstream newspapers and television, which is dominated by millionaire-maker shows, reality TV voyeurism, revenue-driven newscasts and sterilized fiction.
Aftershocks is a film that happened almost by accident. While working as a relief volunteer in the earthquake-affected zone, Rakesh Sharma stumbled across the story. It horrified him enough to overcome his own reluctance about being a part of “disaster tourism”. To many, it seemed like a non-story from the very beginning- 2 tiny villages destroyed by the quake versus a government controlled corporate giant (GMDC - the mining company) out to profit from the quake - not a single adverse report appeared in TV or print till press previews for Aftershocks were held.
