Oaïstern

The Westerns of Joë Hamman and Jean Durand

Jean Durand, 1910-12, FR, 35mm > video, silent

Since 2012, the Oaïstern collective from Marseille has been helping an early 20th century genre of now forgotten cinema come back to life: the first European westerns, the baguetti western, if you will. Jean "Joë" Hamman discovered Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show on a trip to the US. He came back with his eyes full of images – the same images which lie at the roots of the Far West mythology and which have characterised the genre until today. Though these films never portrayed the daily concerns of cowherders, audiences weren’t looking for realism either. In cinema, Hamman found his ideal niche. Using costumes that he brought back with him, and with the vast landscapes of Camargue as the background, Joë made several short films from 1907 onwards, some of which are directed by Gaumont’s Jean Durand: "Pendaison à Jefferson City", "Le railway de la mort", "Cent Dollars mort ou vif"... His films were met with resounding success both in Europe and in the US, but the war put an end to his career. For this special screening, each film is accompanied by different live bands, and the Indiens de la Plaine-Marseille will recreate the authentic atmosphere!

Short films

Shortscreen

For the annual Shortscreen programme, Offscreen and online magazine Kortfilm.be selected seven Belgian short films that fit the Offscreen criteria: original, unusual, bizarre and surprising. The films will be introduced by the filmmakers!

+ De Honger

Benoît De Clerck, BE, 16

Playing in the dunes, young Karel witnesses something that will subvert his boyish vision of the world. A film in magic-realist style that uses minimal means to create maximal atmosphere.

+ Nothing Beside Remains

Bob Thissen, BE, 6

In a post-apocalyptic setting a lonely figure sits in a control room from where he orders camera’s around in search for human companionship. Accompanied by an ominous soundtrack the camera’s hover through empty hallways and ruinous buildings.

+ Franky’s Princess

Gerlando Infuso, BE, 4

If you remember "L’Œil du Paon" from one of our previous Shortscreen editions you can already imagine the gothic style that the Brussels-based Gerlando Infuso used to animate this video for the French electronica of Émilie Simon.

+ E. Riots IH

Paula Hricovini, BE, 4

A monster wanders among people, taking possession of their bodies and feeding on their memories. A dark and moody psychological portrait of a world filled with lost souls.

+ Lilith

Maxim Stollenwerk, BE, 21

Lilith submerges us into the nightly twilight zone of a dark and gloomy Brussels. The film follows a strange young girl with a craving for blood.

+ La résurrection des natures mortes [Living Still Life]

Bertrand Mandico, BE-FR-DE, 16

A mysterious woman brings dead animals back to life with the help of cinema. An obsessive almost ritualistic reflection on the moving image in an enchanting ‘stop motion’ style.

+ Oh My Dog

Chloé Alliez, BE, 6

The ugliest dog in the world is entering the stage in a talent show for dogs. Hilarious, cute and genuinely quirky stop motion.

Joël Rabijns & Yves Sondermeier, 2013, BE, video, ov ang , 83

A living placenta searches for its place in a hostile society, as it is raised as a human, a christian, a soldier. Described by the director’s duo as a bio-ethical horror movie for the whole family, this student project turned full-scale body-horror comedy is homegrown Belgian surrealism at its most trashy.

Segundo de Chomón

by LouisLouis & Truna

A hundred years ago (1905-1911) Spanish director Segundo de Chomon – special-effects genius, phantasmagorical cinema pioneer and arch-rival to Mélies - directed a large number of brilliant short films. In 2012 Louislouis (musician/composer of post Belgian music, pupil of Frédéric Rzewski, presenter of Funk Sinatra and ever-curious music lover) joins Truna (violin builder/musician/composer of eccentric Spanish music and collaborator of Pierre Bastien) decide to rediscover Chomon’s short films. The outcome is an astonishing post-modern piece, a clever melange of traditional-futuristic and prehistoric-electronic music. Their accompaniment alternates between a commentary, a satanic dance and a dreamlike stroll – all perfectly attuned to Chomon’s spirit. Don’t miss a unique chance to watch giant frogs dance on the screen to exhilarating live music!
