Le chantier des gosses

Jean Harlez is an autodidact who plays outside professional circles. He learns film making in 1947 when he becomes Charles Dekeukeleire’s assistant. Then he builds his own 35mm camera and directs a short film on an agricultural cooperative, which will be bought by the Ministry of Agriculture, which permits him to achieve his own dream: "to make a real film", showing life "in a poor neighbourhood that differs in nothing from other poor neighbourhoods of the world". Harlez explores the streets of the Marolles during two years (1954-1956). He quickly gains the inhabitants’ sympathy and he gets to know a bunch of children who becomes little by little his actors...

"Le chantier des gosses" (The Children’s Building Site) is the result of this adventure. This is probably the first Belgian feature film inspired by Neo-Realism. But this is just before Expo 58 (Brussels World’s Fair in 1958) and thus showing the "dirty" impasses of a poor populous neighbourhood in the heart of the capital is simply “not done”.

The film, made without money, had no sound. It is only 15 years later that the soundtrack was created. The film was finalized in 1970, thanks to great enthusiasm, patience and determination of the team. But, in the absence of whatever aid or distribution, the film will stay unnoticed by the audience, ignored by most filmographies on Belgian cinema, never released on DVD or in film theatres... until today, because Nova decided to dig up this treasure for once and for all. During seven weeks the film will be shown on a brand new 35mm print!

To celebrate this (late) release, Nova offers you a view behind the fence of the building site... There you can see other films shot in or around the Marolles, as well as short films on the city, made at the same time by other Belgian directors. You can discover other facets of Jean Harlez : his shorts, his exploration films in Greenland, an exhibition of his collages, a session with Marcel Broodthaers’ and Charles Dekeuleleire’s films... You can even come for a ballroom full of Gypsy jazz rhythms!

Le chantier des gosses

The Children’s Building Site

Jean Harlez, 1956-1970, BE, 35mm, ov fr st ang & nl, 83'

The narrow streets of the Marolles are full with kids. Their paradise is a wasteland. One day, the wasteland is barricaded, disembowelling by machines, while the surrounding houses are pulled down. The amazement of the kids soon turns into revolt: they choose a leader, manufacture catapults with the shoulder straps of their parents and decide to start a war to the entrepreneurs and architects...
"Le chantier des gosses" takes us on a journey into their little world. The kids (the youngest is 2 years and a half, the oldest 14) are the main actors, playing their role with a lot of spontaneity and a great deal of improvisation!

Jean Harlez, 1955, BE, 35mm, ov fr st ang & nl, 15'

The “coco” merchant (coco being "the proletarian lemonade", made from licorice, herbs and lemon) strolls around with his beautiful fountain on his back. This precious document shows the small street trades in the Marolles, all mostly disappeared today.
