For years the cinematic shortage in Italy left festival screens bare and international distributors sulking. However today a new generation of directors is emerging.
Naples, plagued by ongoing conflict, has developed into a unique breeding ground for some of the most creative cinematic energy in the country, and this despite dwindling financial support. Daily life in Naples can be especially harsh, and over the past few years many have fled the city. But city officials have declared war against the camorra, and the crumbling suburbs are back on the agenda. If politicians can live up to the challenge, the city will certainly herald a new spring. Here we invite you on a tour through Naples. Our program consists mainly of documentaries, as the genre is well-positioned to offer insight into the complex reality of daily Neopolitan life. Most of these films have never been screened outside of Italy. And since Italian distributors rarely subtitle their films, and foreign distributors tend to be unadventurous, Nova took on the massive subtitling task in order to make this program possible.
